It is a palace of King Bhupatindra Malla built in NS 818 at the middle part of Durbar Square. At the main entrance of the palace, there are two huge stone lions. It is also called Malati chowk Palace because there is Malati Chowk inside the palace. This palace was the major residence of the Malla Kings in Bhaktapur. After it got destroyed in the 1891 BS earthquake and after Junga Bajadur Rana’s Europe tour, the palace was reconstructed with half of the structure painted with white lime, it was also called Lal Baithak Palace. The Prime Minister BP Koirala established National Art Gallery in this Palace in 2016 BS. Since then, it is known as a gallery building. The April 2015 quake destroyed it completely. People wish it to be reconstructed in its original architecture.
राजा भूपतिन्द्र मल्लले भक्तपुर लायकुको मध्य भागमा रहेको दक्षिणाभिमुख हुने गरी ने.सं. ८१८ मा बनाएको दरवारको मूलढोकाको वरपर एकजोडा बडेमाको सिंहको मूर्ति रहेको कारण सिंहध्वाखा दरवारबाट प्रसिद्ध छ । दरवारको भित्री भागमा रहेको मालती चोकको कारण मालती चोक दरवारले पनि चिनिन्छ । भक्तपुर लायकुको मध्य भागमा रहेको यो दरवार मल्ल राजाहरुको मुख्य बासस्थान पनि हो । वि.सं. १८९१ सालको भूकम्पले क्षति पुर्याएपछि र विशेष गरी राणा प्रधानमन्त्री जंग बहादुर राणाको युरोप भ्रमणपछि जीर्णोद्धारको क्रममा दरवारको पूर्वपट्टीको आधा भाग सेतो चुन बज्र आदिले युरोपियन शैलीले बनाएपछि लाल बैठक दरवारले पनि चिनिन थाल्यो । २०१६ सालमा तत्कालिन प्र.म. विश्वेश्वर प्रसाद कोइरालाले राष्ट्रिय चित्र कला संग्रहालय स्थापना गरेपछि संग्रहालय भवनको रुपमा उपयोग हुदै आएको छ । २०१७ बैशाख १२ गतेको भूकम्पले क्षति पुर्याएपछि पुनः मौलिक स्वरुपमा पुनःनिर्माण हुनुपर्ने जनमतको चाहना छ ।
