Among the various Agam Houses located in the Kathmandu Valley and other states Nepal Mandal, this is the first and chief Agam House of Goddess Taleju. History records that having defeated by Muslims, King Harisingha Dev of Simraungadh, his Queen and Deval Devi and Prince Jagat Singh Kunvar received a shelter in Bhaktapur, the then Capital of Nepal Mandal. It is believed that King Harisingh Dev could not arrive in Bhaktapur because he died on the way at Tinpatan of Dolakha. Queen Deval Devi was happy to find the company of her favorite goddess Taleju in Bhaktapur and built a permanent shrine for the Goddess. The Agamchhen has since been an important center of religious, cultural and tantric rituals. After the death of King Yakshya Malla, his second son Ratna Malla had a shrine of Goddess Taleju built in his Kantipur Palace area in 605 NS. The tradition of having a shrine of Goddess Taleju was followed by all states. A temple of Goddess Taleju was founded even in Bhakhor of Tibet. It is recorded in history that there used to be 99 yards in side the Agamchhe of Goddess Taleju.
काठमाण्डौ उपत्यकाका तीन शहरहरुलगायत नेपाल मण्डलका अन्य राज्यहरुमा तलेजु भवानीको आगम घर नभएको समयमा सबैभन्दा पहिले तथा मूल तलेजू भवानी भक्तपुरमा स्थापना भएको छ । तत्कालीन नेपाल मण्डलको राजधानी भक्तपुर हुँदा ने.सं. ४४३ पौष शुक्ल नवमीको दिन मुसलमानहरुबाट पराजित भई तत्कालीन सिम्रौनगढ राज्यका राजा हरिसिहदेव, रानी देवलदेवी, छोरा जगतसिंह कुंवरलगायतका व्यक्तिहरु तुलजा भावनी लिई शरणमा आएको इतिहास छ । त्यसमा राजा हरिसिंहदेव भक्तपुर आउन नपाई दोलखाको टिंपाटन भन्ने ठाउँमा मृत्यु भएको पनि मानिन्छ । तर देवलदेवी आफ्नो इष्टदेवी श्री तलेजु भवानीको साथ भक्तपुरमा शरण पाएकोमा त्यही तलेजु भवानी पछि यहांका मल्ल राजाहरुको पनि इष्टदेवी बनेपछि तलेजु आगमघर महत्वपूर्ण धार्मिक, सांस्कृतिक, तान्त्रिक केन्द्र बन्न पुग्यो । राजा यक्ष मल्लको मृत्युपछि उनका माहिलो छोरा रत्न मल्लले कान्तिपुरमा छुट्टै राज्य स्थापना गर्ने ने.सं. ६०५ मा कान्तिपुर लायकुमा तलेजु भवानीको मन्दिर स्थापना गरे । त्यस पश्चात् हरेक साना ठूला राज्यहरुमा तलेजु भवानी स्थापना गर्ने परम्परा विकास भयो । तिब्बतको भाखोरमा समेत तलेजु भवानीको आगमघर निर्माण भएको पाइन्छ। भक्तपुरको तलेजु आगमघर भित्र समयमा ९९ विभिन्न चोक तथा आधा दर्जन विभिन्न दरवारहरु रहेको इतिहास छ ।
