Located on the route from Tachapal Tole to Sokolan in Bhaktapur, the temple was originally known as Sokolan Ganesh, later becoming popular as Salan Ganesh over time. It is one of the ancient Ganesh temples of Bhaktapur, as evidenced by its symbolic inscription. This Ganesh is also regarded as one of the Ashta (eight) Ganesh of the city. Facing south, the three-tiered pagoda-style temple is believed to have been built during the reign of the influential 16th-century king Jagat Prakash Malla.
Situated along the circumambulatory route of Bhaktapur, the temple plays an important role in major festivals and processions. On the occasion of the Ghanta Karna festival, a cultural ritual of burning Ghanta Karna takes place in the temple premises, making it a significant religious and cultural site.
