Bisket Jatra is one of the most vibrant and powerful festivals celebrated in Bhaktapur, Nepal, marking the Nepali New Year. It usually takes place in mid-April and reflects the deep cultural identity, unity, and bravery of the Newar community.
Historically, Bisket Jatra is believed to symbolize the victory over evil forces. One popular legend tells the story of a cursed serpent that caused the death of princes. When the truth was revealed and the serpent was defeated, the people celebrated their freedom, which later evolved into Bisket Jatra. Another interpretation connects the festival to the transition of the sun from Pisces to Aries, symbolizing renewal and new beginnings.
The most iconic event of Bisket Jatra is the tug-of-war (Bhimsenthan Jatra), where two groups pull a massive chariot of Lord Bhairav in opposite directions. This act represents strength, balance, and the struggle between opposing forces in life. It also reflects community participation, as thousands of locals actively take part.
Another major ritual is the erection and falling of the Lingam pole (Yosin Dyo). The raising of the pole signifies power and prosperity, while its fall marks the end of the old year and the start of a new one. People believe that witnessing this event brings good luck and protection.
